Carry On

Carry On

August 13, 2020

One of my all time favorite books!! I've reread this SO many times (maybe around 5/6?) and it is just perfect.

I named a top secret undercover agent after Baz because I liked the name so much! Also, it's totally the Harry x Draco canon we didn't get from the HP books..

Some probably will criticize Carry On for being too similar to Harry Potter (the main character, who is prophesized as the Greatest Mage or “The Chosen One” attends Watford School of Magicks, and is also set in England). Yes, it’s clearly meant to be a parody of the Harry Potter universe. However, in this case, that doesn’t take away from any of its merit.

The chemistry between Simon and Baz is REALLY good. Their earlier relationship draws many parallels between Draco and Harry’s. Draco Malfoy and Tyrannus “Baz” Basilton Grimm-Pitch (I know! Rainbow Rowell wins prize for coolest evil name) both descend from evil families. Draco’s a Death-Eater, Baz a vampire. And they both rival a prophesized Chosen One. In both book series, the pair is obsessed with each other. Both Harry and Simon spend their time at school constantly suspicious of their counterparts scheming, and spend a majority of their time following their every move to find them guilty of said scheming. I mean, in this case, the enemies-to-lovers trope isn’t even surprising—they are literally obsessed with each other.

I read the sequel to this book, Wayward Son, but honestly it was a letdown. Carry On was just so perfect, and it ended perfectly too, so it’s hard for anything to live up to that. Carry On was playful, and fun, but Wayward Son takes a much more serious tone.

In either case, Carry On rocks! :D
